How to Make a Pulse Slot

Pulses or pulsing action is also known as the frictional force when applied to the surface and causes it to vibrate. Depending on the size of the waves created the output will either be static or pulsating.

There are many applications for a pulsing slot. You can have a window that creates a pulsing slot effect if you apply two or more slots together. You may want to use this technique with a very large light or wall mounted fixture. It’s possible to make the slot wider if you want to create more variation.

If you know how to create wave patterns you can make a slot that creates an endless wave pattern. What happens when you apply the above concept to a wall mounted fixture is the slot creates a wave pattern on a track that runs vertically through the fixture. The horizontal line running through the slot provides a pattern of varying widths along the track. The horizontal line is interrupted by the slot, creating different widths in each of the spikes that run through the slot. This can create a very attractive looking effect that is both natural and artificial at the same time.

If you were to apply the above concept to a large light or fixture there is room for a wide pattern of waves. One alternative design is to create a parallel line across the top of the fixture and run each light through a spike. You can create the same effect by applying a parallax to the top and bottom spikes. If you do it right, it looks great, but if you miss you’ll have less than perfect results.

Photographers love pulse slot designs and they can make very good images. To do this you first need to know the topography of the room you are photographing and then you’ll be able to add the effects you desire. Even though there are many variations to the design you can take a basic design and make it special with a little tweaking.

Depending on the size of the aperture and shutter you may have to add some kind of diffuser. Diffusers give a better sense of depth to the images and they also give a very nice ambient glow to the scene. Other options to consider are using lens filters that are strategically placed so that they cover a certain part of the slot and thus avoid using the entire slot area. A very simple design would be to use one very large filter in the slot and a few smaller ones nearby that cover a specific part of the slot.

It’s very important that you don’t let your pulse slot completely touch the surface it is touching. This will cause it to vibrate and create noise. The slot must be slightly larger than the surface you are using. It should be able to provide support without bumping up against the surface.

There are several companies out there that make slot based products with many different sizes and shapes. They are all fairly inexpensive and can be created in a variety of ways.
